What I see in Auckland

Why Auckland students get stuck in maths

The same three things account for most of the maths marks lost by Auckland students.

Algebra that was never made automatic

Almost every maths problem later on runs through rearranging and factorising. Where those are slow, the actual topic disappears under the arithmetic.

Large senior maths classes

Senior maths classes in Auckland are often big enough that a student who needs a concept explained a second way simply does not get it.

Method memorised, understanding missing

A student can reproduce a worked example perfectly and still freeze when the numbers move. Excellence questions are written to catch exactly that.

The method

How we tutor maths for Auckland students

Every student is taught with the same method. What changes is how far back we need to go.

1

Find where the marks actually go

Aaron reads recent tests and internals and lists every topic costing marks, and how far back each one goes.

2

Rebuild the algebra underneath

Nothing else sticks until rearranging and solving are automatic, even if that means going back a year or two.

3

Prove it on unseen questions

Every topic gets tested on problems your teen has not seen before, because recognising a worked example is not the same as scoring.

4

Train the written answer

Aaron marks with the NZQA schedule open, so your teen learns exactly what separates Achieved, Merit and Excellence.

Who teaches your teen

Maths tutoring in Auckland, led by Aaron

Aaron finished NCEA with more than 310 Excellence credits and was Dux and Head Boy in the same year. He teaches a small group of students himself and matches everyone else with a specialist tutor he has handpicked and trained in his method. He speaks to every family and reviews every plan, so your teen gets the same standard whoever teaches them.

The difference a year makes

What maths tutoring in Auckland can change by November

This is the pattern we see most often. Two students are on the same grade in March, and only one of them gets weekly support.

What we cover

NCEA maths for Auckland students

Lessons follow whatever your teen's school is teaching, from Year 10 through to Level 3 Calculus and Statistics.

Externals are the November exams

The externals carry most of the credits, and in maths, physics and chemistry they are sat within days of each other. NZQA marks them. One under-prepared topic can drag a whole subject down.

Internals are done at school

Internals are the practicals, investigations and reports assessed at school through the year. Teachers mark them and NZQA checks a sample. They are where a steady student builds a safety net before November.

The pathway

Maths across NCEA Levels 1 to 3

Here is every standard your teen is assessed on, and which parts NZQA marks in November rather than the school during the year.

Compulsory

Numeracy co-requisite (CAA)

Sat online and graded Achieved or Not Achieved. Without it NCEA is not awarded at any level, however many subject credits your teen has. Most students first sit it in Year 10, it can be sat again in Year 11, 12 or 13, and it only has to be passed once. Numeracy CAA tutoring ›

From parents

What parents say about our NCEA tutoring

“Our son was scraping Achieved in Year 12 Physics and had convinced himself he just was not a science person. Aaron worked out in the first couple of sessions that the real problem was algebra from Year 10, went back and fixed that, and suddenly the physics started making sense. He finished the year with Merit in both externals and actually enjoys the subject now. The weekly update was a lovely touch, because for the first time we knew how he was going without having to drag it out of him.”

KWKaren W.Mum of a Year 12 student

“I was really struggling with differentiation and my teacher's explanations just were not clicking. Aaron explains things in a way that actually makes sense, and he never made me feel dumb for asking the same thing twice. I went from Not Achieved in my first internal to Excellence in the exam. Honestly the best decision I made this year.”

DKDaniel K.Year 13 student

“Our daughter used to go quiet whenever maths came up. After a term she was putting her hand up in class and asking for harder questions. Her confidence has completely turned around, and the grades came with it.”

MTMele T.Mum of a Year 11 student

“Aaron matched our son with one of his chemistry specialists after a disappointing mid year report. The lessons are structured, there is a workbook every week, and everything is marked the way NZQA marks it, so he finally knew what an Excellence answer looks like. He finished with Excellence in two of his three externals, which we did not think was possible back in March.”

SLSarah L.Mum of a Year 12 student

“Patient, reliable and great with teenagers. Our son actually looks forward to his sessions, which says it all. Highly recommend.”

Your questions

Questions Auckland parents ask about maths tutoring

Do you tutor maths students across Auckland?
Yes. Lessons run online, so Aaron tutors students anywhere in Auckland at the same price and the same availability.
Will my teen be taught by Aaron?
Aaron teaches a small group of students himself. When your teen is better matched with a specialist in their subject, Aaron pairs them with one of his handpicked tutors, trained in exactly the same method. Either way, Aaron speaks to you first, reviews the plan and stays across your teen's progress all year.
Which maths subject does my teen sit?
At Levels 1 and 2 it is Mathematics and Statistics. At Level 3 it splits into Calculus and Statistics, and students can take either or both.
Is online maths tutoring as good as in person in Auckland?
It is better in the ways that matter for maths. You both write on a shared whiteboard, and the whole page saves and sends afterwards, so your teen revises from the actual working rather than a photo of a notebook.
What does maths tutoring cost in Auckland?
Auckland families pay exactly what everyone else pays, because lessons are online. A single hour is $90, two hours a week is $160, and a block of twelve is $960.
How soon would we see a difference?
Aaron can list every topic costing marks within the first two lessons, and most parents notice a change in confidence before the next internal.
