Nothing counts, so nothing gets noticed
A gap that opens in Year 10 does not show up as a failed standard. It shows up in Year 11 as a Not Achieved, by which point fixing it costs credits as well as time.

Aaron, founder of Ace NCEA, is your Year 10 tutor for maths and science, teaching one on one online, anywhere in New Zealand. Year 10 is the cheapest year there is to fix a gap, because nothing counts for NCEA yet.
What goes wrong
There are no credits in Year 10, so a widening gap produces no alarming report until it is expensive.
A gap that opens in Year 10 does not show up as a failed standard. It shows up in Year 11 as a Not Achieved, by which point fixing it costs credits as well as time.
Level 1, 2 and 3 maths all assume Year 10 algebra is automatic, and so do physics and chemistry. One weak year quietly shows up in four subjects.
How to set work out, how to check an answer, how to ask a question in class. These are far easier to build at fourteen than to retrofit at seventeen with externals coming.
The method
No exam pressure yet, so lessons can go at the pace the student actually needs.
With no credits at stake there is room to go right back. Aaron works backwards until he finds the first thing that is not automatic, and starts teaching there.
Year 10 is the one year where a topic can be taught until it genuinely sticks rather than until the test arrives. That is what makes it such good value.
Setting work out, checking an answer, asking a question before the lesson moves on. Far easier to build at fourteen than to retrofit at seventeen.
By the end of the year your teen should be starting Level 1 learning new content instead of catching up on old content.
Who teaches your teen
Aaron finished NCEA with more than 310 Excellence credits and was Dux and Head Boy in the same year. He teaches a small group of students himself and matches everyone else with a specialist tutor he has handpicked and trained in his method. He speaks to every family and reviews every plan, so your teen gets the same standard whoever teaches them.
Not sure whether Year 10 tutoring is worth it?Aaron will tell you honestly on a free 20 minute call, including if the answer is not yet.

This is the pattern we see most often. Two students are on the same grade in March, and only one of them gets weekly support.
What we cover
There are no NCEA standards in Year 10, so lessons are built entirely around what your teen's school is teaching and what they are missing.
External standards are the papers your teen sits in the national exams at the end of the year, marked by NZQA rather than the school. They usually carry the most credits in a subject.
Internal standards are assessed at school as investigations, reports, practicals and in-class tests. Teachers mark them and NZQA checks a sample. Credits bank as your teen goes.
Fractions, negatives, indices, expanding, factorising and solving. This is the highest leverage content in the whole junior curriculum, because Levels 1 to 3 all sit on top of it.
Method, measurement, units, graph reading and scientific writing, plus the chemistry, physics and biology basics that Level 1 assumes on day one.
The compulsory numeracy co-requisite can be sat from Year 9. Passing it in Year 10 takes a compulsory requirement off an already busy Year 11.
What this level covers
Here are the subjects your teen can sit at this level, and which parts are examined in November rather than assessed at school.
Sat online and graded Achieved or Not Achieved. Without it NCEA is not awarded at any level, however many subject credits your teen has. Most students first sit it in Year 10, it can be sat again in Year 11, 12 or 13, and it only has to be passed once. Numeracy CAA tutoring ›
Nothing counts for NCEA yet, which makes this the cheapest year there is to fix a gap. Number and algebra here quietly hold up maths, physics and chemistry for the next three years.

For a Year 10 who is already comfortable. Aaron takes them into Level 1 material a year early, so Year 11 is revision rather than first contact and the internals start banking credits from Term 1 instead of Term 3.
How it works
Every student follows the same four steps, so you always know what is happening and why.
Tell Aaron about your teen. In twenty minutes he will find where the marks are being lost and explain what it will take to fix it.
Aaron teaches a small group of students himself and matches everyone else with a specialist tutor he has chosen for their subject.
After the first lesson you get a written plan showing every gap, how it will be fixed and in what order. Aaron reviews every plan.
Your teen gets a workbook for each week, and you get a short written update on how they are going.
From parents
“Our son was scraping Achieved in Year 12 Physics and had convinced himself he just was not a science person. Aaron worked out in the first couple of sessions that the real problem was algebra from Year 10, went back and fixed that, and suddenly the physics started making sense. He finished the year with Merit in both externals and actually enjoys the subject now. The weekly update was a lovely touch, because for the first time we knew how he was going without having to drag it out of him.”
“I was really struggling with differentiation and my teacher's explanations just were not clicking. Aaron explains things in a way that actually makes sense, and he never made me feel dumb for asking the same thing twice. I went from Not Achieved in my first internal to Excellence in the exam. Honestly the best decision I made this year.”
“Our daughter used to go quiet whenever maths came up. After a term she was putting her hand up in class and asking for harder questions. Her confidence has completely turned around, and the grades came with it.”
“Aaron matched our son with one of his chemistry specialists after a disappointing mid year report. The lessons are structured, there is a workbook every week, and everything is marked the way NZQA marks it, so he finally knew what an Excellence answer looks like. He finished with Excellence in two of his three externals, which we did not think was possible back in March.”
“Patient, reliable and great with teenagers. Our son actually looks forward to his sessions, which says it all. Highly recommend.”
