NCEA algebra tutoring that fixes the gap under everything else

Aaron, founder of Ace NCEA, is your NCEA algebra tutor, rebuilding it properly, one on one and online. Algebra is the single most common reason a capable student stalls in maths, physics and chemistry at once.

What goes wrong

Where algebra marks actually go

The same three things account for most of the marks lost in NCEA algebra.

It shows up as a physics or chemistry problem

When rearranging is slow, physics questions take twice as long and chemistry calculations fall apart. Parents often think the problem is the science, when it is the algebra underneath.

A rule learned without a reason

Moving a term across and changing the sign works right up until the problem looks slightly different. Rules without reasons do not survive an Excellence question.

Gaps that go back years

Algebra compounds harder than any other topic. A Level 2 student struggling with logs is often really struggling with indices from Year 9, and no amount of Level 2 revision will find that.

The method

How we tutor NCEA algebra

Every student is taught with the same method. What changes is how far back we need to go.

1

Trace the gap back to where it started

Aaron works backwards until he finds the first thing that was never properly taught. Sometimes that is one year back, sometimes it is three.

2

Rebuild it with the reasoning attached

Every rule gets taught with the why behind it, so it still works when the question is phrased differently.

3

Drill it until it is automatic

Algebra has to be fast, not just correct. If your teen is thinking about the rearranging, they are not thinking about the actual problem.

4

Put it back into the real subject

Once the algebra is fluent, Aaron takes it straight back into the maths, physics or chemistry questions it was blocking.

Who teaches your teen

NCEA algebra tutoring led by Aaron

Aaron finished NCEA with more than 310 Excellence credits and was Dux and Head Boy in the same year. He teaches a small group of students himself and matches everyone else with a specialist tutor he has handpicked and trained in his method. He speaks to every family and reviews every plan, so your teen gets the same standard whoever teaches them.

The difference a year makes

What NCEA algebra tutoring can change by November

This is the pattern we see most often. Two students are on the same grade in March, and only one of them gets weekly support.

What we cover

NCEA algebra tutoring, Levels 1 to 3

Lessons follow whatever your teen's school is teaching. Here is which parts are examined in November and which are assessed at school.

Externals are the November exams

The externals carry most of the credits, and in maths, physics and chemistry they are sat within days of each other. NZQA marks them. One under-prepared topic can drag a whole subject down.

Internals are done at school

Internals are the practicals, investigations and reports assessed at school through the year. Teachers mark them and NZQA checks a sample. They are where a steady student builds a safety net before November.

The pathway

Algebra across NCEA Levels 1 to 3

Here is every standard your teen is assessed on, and which parts NZQA marks in November rather than the school during the year.

Compulsory

Numeracy co-requisite (CAA)

Sat online and graded Achieved or Not Achieved. Without it NCEA is not awarded at any level, however many subject credits your teen has. Most students first sit it in Year 10, it can be sat again in Year 11, 12 or 13, and it only has to be passed once. Numeracy CAA tutoring ›

Nothing counts for NCEA yet, which makes this the cheapest year there is to fix a gap. Number and algebra here quietly hold up maths, physics and chemistry for the next three years.

Head start on Level 1

For a Year 10 who is already comfortable. Aaron takes them into Level 1 material a year early, so Year 11 is revision rather than first contact and the internals start banking credits from Term 1 instead of Term 3.

How it works

How NCEA algebra tutoring works

Every student follows the same four steps, so you always know what is happening and why.

1

Book a free call

Tell Aaron about your teen. In twenty minutes he will find where the marks are being lost and explain what it will take to fix it.

2

Get matched with the right tutor

Aaron teaches a small group of students himself and matches everyone else with a specialist tutor he has chosen for their subject.

3

Receive a clear plan

After the first lesson you get a written plan showing every gap, how it will be fixed and in what order. Aaron reviews every plan.

4

See progress every week

Your teen gets a workbook for each week, and you get a short written update on how they are going.

From parents

What parents say about our NCEA tutoring

“Our son was scraping Achieved in Year 12 Physics and had convinced himself he just was not a science person. Aaron worked out in the first couple of sessions that the real problem was algebra from Year 10, went back and fixed that, and suddenly the physics started making sense. He finished the year with Merit in both externals and actually enjoys the subject now. The weekly update was a lovely touch, because for the first time we knew how he was going without having to drag it out of him.”

KWKaren W.Mum of a Year 12 student

“I was really struggling with differentiation and my teacher's explanations just were not clicking. Aaron explains things in a way that actually makes sense, and he never made me feel dumb for asking the same thing twice. I went from Not Achieved in my first internal to Excellence in the exam. Honestly the best decision I made this year.”

DKDaniel K.Year 13 student

“Our daughter used to go quiet whenever maths came up. After a term she was putting her hand up in class and asking for harder questions. Her confidence has completely turned around, and the grades came with it.”

MTMele T.Mum of a Year 11 student

“Aaron matched our son with one of his chemistry specialists after a disappointing mid year report. The lessons are structured, there is a workbook every week, and everything is marked the way NZQA marks it, so he finally knew what an Excellence answer looks like. He finished with Excellence in two of his three externals, which we did not think was possible back in March.”

SLSarah L.Mum of a Year 12 student

“Patient, reliable and great with teenagers. Our son actually looks forward to his sessions, which says it all. Highly recommend.”

Your questions

Questions parents ask about NCEA algebra tutoring

Is algebra its own NCEA subject?
No. It sits inside Mathematics and Statistics at Levels 1 and 2, and inside Calculus at Level 3. It is also assumed knowledge in physics and chemistry.
Will my teen be taught by Aaron?
Aaron teaches a small group of students himself. When your teen is better matched with a specialist in their subject, Aaron pairs them with one of his handpicked tutors, trained in exactly the same method. Either way, Aaron speaks to you first, reviews the plan and stays across your teen's progress all year.
My teen is fine at maths but struggles in physics. Could it be algebra?
Very often, yes. Physics assumes rearranging is effortless, and when it is not the physics disappears under the arithmetic.
How far back do you go?
As far as the gap goes. Aaron has taken Level 3 students back to Year 9 indices, because that was genuinely where the problem started.
How long does it take to fix?
Fluency usually comes back over a term at two lessons a week. The confidence tends to shift before the grade does.
Is Year 10 too early to worry about it?
Year 10 is the cheapest year there is to fix an algebra gap, because nothing counts for NCEA yet.
