What goes wrong

What catches Year 11 families off guard

Level 1 was redeveloped recently, so a lot of the advice floating around is out of date.

Numeracy is compulsory and completely separate

It is not part of the maths subject. It is a standalone online assessment, graded pass or fail, and without it NCEA is not awarded at any level. Plenty of families only hear about it once it has been missed.

The subject names changed

Science is now four separate subjects at Level 1, and the assessments are new. Older tutoring material and past papers do not always match what your teen is actually sitting.

Credits start banking in Term 1

Internals are marked at school from early in the year. A slow start is genuinely hard to recover because those credits are already locked in, which is why starting early beats working harder in October.

The method

How we tutor NCEA Level 1

Every student is taught with the same method. What changes is where we start and how fast your teen can move.

1

Work out what is actually missing

Aaron looks at your teen's first internals and any Year 10 work before lesson one. Level 1 problems almost always start earlier than Year 11, and naming exactly where is most of the fix.

2

Teach it until your teen can explain it

Year 11 is the first year anything counts, so confidence matters as much as content. We stay on a topic until your teen can explain it back without notes.

3

Show them what NCEA actually rewards

Most Year 11 students have never seen the difference between an Achieved answer and a Merit one written side by side. Aaron shows them, using their own work.

4

Bank credits early, not in November

Internals run all year. Aaron plans around your teen's assessment calendar so credits land steadily instead of everything resting on the exams.

Who teaches your teen

NCEA Level 1 tutoring led by Aaron

Aaron finished NCEA with more than 310 Excellence credits and was Dux and Head Boy in the same year. He teaches a small group of students himself and matches everyone else with a specialist tutor he has handpicked and trained in his method. He speaks to every family and reviews every plan, so your teen gets the same standard whoever teaches them.

The difference a year makes

What NCEA Level 1 tutoring can change by November

This is the pattern we see most often. Two students are on the same grade in March, and only one of them gets weekly support.

What we cover

NCEA Level 1 subjects Aaron tutors

Level 1 is Year 11. Lessons follow whatever your teen's school is teaching, so tutoring supports the class rather than running alongside it.

Externals are the November exams

At Level 1 the externals are the papers your teen sits in the national exams at the end of Year 11. NZQA marks them, not the school, and the results come back in January.

Internals are done at school

Internals are assessed during the year through investigations, reports and in-class tasks. Teachers mark them and NZQA moderates a sample. Credits bank as your teen goes, so Term 1 already counts.

How it works

How NCEA Level 1 tutoring works

Every student follows the same four steps, so you always know what is happening and why.

1

Book a free call

Tell Aaron about your teen. In twenty minutes he will find where the marks are being lost and explain what it will take to fix it.

2

Get matched with the right tutor

Aaron teaches a small group of students himself and matches everyone else with a specialist tutor he has chosen for their subject.

3

Receive a clear plan

After the first lesson you get a written plan showing every gap, how it will be fixed and in what order. Aaron reviews every plan.

4

See progress every week

Your teen gets a workbook for each week, and you get a short written update on how they are going.

From parents

What parents say about our NCEA tutoring

“Our son was scraping Achieved in Year 12 Physics and had convinced himself he just was not a science person. Aaron worked out in the first couple of sessions that the real problem was algebra from Year 10, went back and fixed that, and suddenly the physics started making sense. He finished the year with Merit in both externals and actually enjoys the subject now. The weekly update was a lovely touch, because for the first time we knew how he was going without having to drag it out of him.”

KWKaren W.Mum of a Year 12 student

“I was really struggling with differentiation and my teacher's explanations just were not clicking. Aaron explains things in a way that actually makes sense, and he never made me feel dumb for asking the same thing twice. I went from Not Achieved in my first internal to Excellence in the exam. Honestly the best decision I made this year.”

DKDaniel K.Year 13 student

“Our daughter used to go quiet whenever maths came up. After a term she was putting her hand up in class and asking for harder questions. Her confidence has completely turned around, and the grades came with it.”

MTMele T.Mum of a Year 11 student

“Aaron matched our son with one of his chemistry specialists after a disappointing mid year report. The lessons are structured, there is a workbook every week, and everything is marked the way NZQA marks it, so he finally knew what an Excellence answer looks like. He finished with Excellence in two of his three externals, which we did not think was possible back in March.”

SLSarah L.Mum of a Year 12 student

“Patient, reliable and great with teenagers. Our son actually looks forward to his sessions, which says it all. Highly recommend.”

JPJames P.Dad of a Year 10 student

Your questions

Questions parents ask about NCEA Level 1 tutoring

How many credits does my teen need for NCEA Level 1?
Sixty credits at Level 1 or above, plus the 20 credit literacy and numeracy co-requisite. The co-requisite is separate, compulsory, and only has to be met once across all three levels.
Will my teen be taught by Aaron?
Aaron teaches a small group of students himself. When your teen is better matched with a specialist in their subject, Aaron pairs them with one of his handpicked tutors, trained in exactly the same method. Either way, Aaron speaks to you first, reviews the plan and stays across your teen's progress all year.
Is NCEA Level 1 the same as Year 11?
Yes. Level 1 is normally sat in Year 11, Level 2 in Year 12 and Level 3 in Year 13. Some students sit standards from a different level, but that is the standard pattern.
What is the difference between an internal and an external?
Externals are the papers sat in the November exams and marked by NZQA. Internals are assessed at school through the year and marked by teachers, with NZQA checking a sample.
What are the Level 1 science subjects now?
Four separate subjects: Science, Chemistry and Biology, Physics Earth and Space Science, and Agricultural and Horticultural Science. Schools offer different combinations, so it is worth checking what your teen is enrolled in.
Does Level 1 matter if my teen only cares about Level 3?
More than most families expect. Level 1 algebra and scientific explanation are assumed at Level 2, and Level 2 is assumed at Level 3. Gaps compound rather than disappear.
