Online NCEA Level 2 Tutoring · Year 12 · New Zealand Wide
Aaron, founder of Ace NCEA, is your NCEA Level 2 tutor for maths, physics and chemistry, teaching one on one online. NCEA Level 2 is Year 12, and it quietly decides which Level 3 subjects are still possible.
What goes wrong
Level 2 asks for something different from Level 1, and nobody tells students what.
Level 2 wants reasoning that links several ideas at once, where Level 1 often rewarded recalling one. Capable students hit this wall, and it says nothing about how bright they are.
Schools usually want a Merit in Level 2 algebra and calculus before allowing Level 3 Calculus. A weak Level 2 closes subjects, and therefore degrees, a full year before anyone notices.
In maths, physics and chemistry the main papers land within days of each other in November. One under-prepared topic can drag a whole subject down, which is why timed practice from Term 1 matters.
The method
Every student is taught with the same method. What changes is where we start and how fast your teen can move.
Aaron reads recent work with next year in mind, because Level 2 results decide which Level 3 subjects stay open. You will know within two lessons what is realistic.
Level 2 assumes Level 1 is automatic and spends no time revisiting it. Aaron goes back and fixes that first, because nothing else sticks until he does.
The big papers are sat within days of each other. Aaron runs them under real time limits from Term 1, which is the fastest way to lift an external grade.
Aaron marks with the real schedule open, the same document the examiner uses, so your teen learns exactly what separates Achieved, Merit and Excellence.
Who teaches your teen
Aaron finished NCEA with more than 310 Excellence credits and was Dux and Head Boy in the same year. He teaches a small group of students himself and matches everyone else with a specialist tutor he has handpicked and trained in his method. He speaks to every family and reviews every plan, so your teen gets the same standard whoever teaches them.
Worried Level 3 options are closing?A free 20 minute call is enough for Aaron to tell you what is still realistic.

This is the pattern we see most often. Two students are on the same grade in March, and only one of them gets weekly support.
What we cover
Level 2 is Year 12. Lessons follow whatever your teen's school is teaching, so tutoring supports the class rather than running alongside it.
In Year 12 the externals carry most of the credits, and in maths, physics and chemistry they are sat within days of each other. NZQA marks them. One under-prepared topic can drag a whole subject down.
Internals are the practicals, investigations and reports assessed at school through the year. Teachers mark them and NZQA checks a sample. They are where a steady student builds a safety net before November.
Algebra, calculus and probability sit in the November exams. Graphs, trigonometry and statistical inference are done at school during the year.
Mechanics, waves and electricity are the three November papers and carry most of the credits. Atomic physics and the practical investigation are internal.
Bonding, organic chemistry and reactivity sit in the November exams. The titration and ion identification practicals are done at school.
What this level covers
Here are the subjects your teen can sit at this level, and which parts are examined in November rather than assessed at school.
Sat online and graded Achieved or Not Achieved. Without it NCEA is not awarded at any level, however many subject credits your teen has. Most students first sit it in Year 10, it can be sat again in Year 11, 12 or 13, and it only has to be passed once. Numeracy CAA tutoring ›
The fork in the road. How your teen goes in algebra and calculus here decides whether Level 3 Calculus is realistic next year.
Three big papers sit in the November exams within days of each other and carry most of the credits in the subject.
The year chemistry turns abstract and memorising stops working. Three externals plus the titration practical.
How it works
Every student follows the same four steps, so you always know what is happening and why.
Tell Aaron about your teen. In twenty minutes he will find where the marks are being lost and explain what it will take to fix it.
Aaron teaches a small group of students himself and matches everyone else with a specialist tutor he has chosen for their subject.
After the first lesson you get a written plan showing every gap, how it will be fixed and in what order. Aaron reviews every plan.
Your teen gets a workbook for each week, and you get a short written update on how they are going.
From parents
“Our son was scraping Achieved in Year 12 Physics and had convinced himself he just was not a science person. Aaron worked out in the first couple of sessions that the real problem was algebra from Year 10, went back and fixed that, and suddenly the physics started making sense. He finished the year with Merit in both externals and actually enjoys the subject now. The weekly update was a lovely touch, because for the first time we knew how he was going without having to drag it out of him.”
“I was really struggling with differentiation and my teacher's explanations just were not clicking. Aaron explains things in a way that actually makes sense, and he never made me feel dumb for asking the same thing twice. I went from Not Achieved in my first internal to Excellence in the exam. Honestly the best decision I made this year.”
“Our daughter used to go quiet whenever maths came up. After a term she was putting her hand up in class and asking for harder questions. Her confidence has completely turned around, and the grades came with it.”
“Aaron matched our son with one of his chemistry specialists after a disappointing mid year report. The lessons are structured, there is a workbook every week, and everything is marked the way NZQA marks it, so he finally knew what an Excellence answer looks like. He finished with Excellence in two of his three externals, which we did not think was possible back in March.”
“Patient, reliable and great with teenagers. Our son actually looks forward to his sessions, which says it all. Highly recommend.”

Your questions
The call takes twenty minutes, it is free and there is no obligation. You do not need any results to hand. Tell Aaron the year and the subject and he will take it from there.
