What I see in Wellington

Why Wellington students come to me for NCEA tutoring

Every region has its own pressures. These are the three that come up again and again with Wellington families.

Academically strong schools raise the bar

Wellington College, Wellington Girls' and Onslow have strong senior cohorts. A student sitting on Achieved in that environment can look average on paper while actually being close to Merit with the right teaching.

Hill suburbs make evening tutoring unreliable

Getting from Karori or Khandallah to a tutor on a wet winter evening is a genuine barrier. It is the single most common reason Wellington families stop tutoring after a term.

Subject choice pressure in Year 12

With Victoria and Otago both on the table, Wellington students often carry two science subjects plus Calculus. That combination is manageable, but only if Level 2 is solid first.

Wellington schools

NCEA tutoring for students at Wellington schools

We tutor students from schools right across the Wellington region, and from suburbs including Karori, Kelburn, Thorndon, Miramar, Island Bay, Johnsonville, Khandallah, Newtown, Tawa and Churton Park. Lessons follow the exact standards your teen's school is teaching.

Wellington students frequently apply to Victoria University of Wellington, and a large number go to Otago for Health Sciences. Both weight Level 3 results heavily, and Victoria's competitive programmes look at rank score in the same way.

The difference a year makes

What NCEA tutoring in Wellington can change by November

This is the pattern we see most often. Two students are on the same grade in March, and only one of them gets weekly support.

Online, not in person

Why online NCEA tutoring beats an in person tutor in Wellington

Driving to a tutor made sense when a whiteboard and a pen were the only tools available. That stopped being true years ago.

A traditional in person tutor

  • In Wellington that often means a wet night on a hill suburb before the lesson even starts
  • Travel time that costs more than the lesson itself
  • Traffic, illness and weather decide whether it happens
  • A tiny local pool, mostly booked out by Term 2
  • Notes scattered across a workbook and a whiteboard photo
  • Holidays and exam leave usually mean a break in momentum

Online with Aaron

  • Identical for a student in Wellington, Karori to Miramar or anywhere else
  • No travel, so a lesson happens on a school night without a fight
  • Consistency, which is the thing that actually moves a grade
  • One specialist tutor, whatever your postcode
  • A saved digital whiteboard your teen can revise from
  • Real past papers marked in front of them, live

What we tutor

NCEA subjects we tutor in Wellington

Pick a level to see exactly what your teen sits this year, and which parts NZQA examines in November.

Compulsory

Numeracy co-requisite (CAA)

Sat online and graded Achieved or Not Achieved. Without it NCEA is not awarded at any level, however many subject credits your teen has. Most students first sit it in Year 10, it can be sat again in Year 11, 12 or 13, and it only has to be passed once. Numeracy CAA tutoring ›

How it works

How NCEA tutoring in Wellington works

Every student follows the same four steps, so you always know what is happening and why.

1

Book a free call

Tell Aaron about your teen. In twenty minutes he will find where the marks are being lost and explain what it will take to fix it.

2

Get matched with the right tutor

Aaron teaches a small group of students himself and matches everyone else with a specialist tutor he has chosen for their subject.

3

Receive a clear plan

After the first lesson you get a written plan showing every gap, how it will be fixed and in what order. Aaron reviews every plan.

4

See progress every week

Your teen gets a workbook for each week, and you get a short written update on how they are going.

From parents

What parents say about our NCEA tutoring

“Our son was scraping Achieved in Year 12 Physics and had convinced himself he just was not a science person. Aaron worked out in the first couple of sessions that the real problem was algebra from Year 10, went back and fixed that, and suddenly the physics started making sense. He finished the year with Merit in both externals and actually enjoys the subject now. The weekly update was a lovely touch, because for the first time we knew how he was going without having to drag it out of him.”

KWKaren W.Mum of a Year 12 student

“I was really struggling with differentiation and my teacher's explanations just were not clicking. Aaron explains things in a way that actually makes sense, and he never made me feel dumb for asking the same thing twice. I went from Not Achieved in my first internal to Excellence in the exam. Honestly the best decision I made this year.”

DKDaniel K.Year 13 student

“Our daughter used to go quiet whenever maths came up. After a term she was putting her hand up in class and asking for harder questions. Her confidence has completely turned around, and the grades came with it.”

MTMele T.Mum of a Year 11 student

“Aaron matched our son with one of his chemistry specialists after a disappointing mid year report. The lessons are structured, there is a workbook every week, and everything is marked the way NZQA marks it, so he finally knew what an Excellence answer looks like. He finished with Excellence in two of his three externals, which we did not think was possible back in March.”

SLSarah L.Mum of a Year 12 student

“Patient, reliable and great with teenagers. Our son actually looks forward to his sessions, which says it all. Highly recommend.”

Your questions

Questions Wellington parents ask about NCEA tutoring

Do you tutor students in Karori, Khandallah and the northern suburbs?
Yes. Aaron tutors students across Wellington including Karori, Kelburn, Khandallah, Johnsonville, Tawa and Miramar. Lessons are online, so a wet evening or a hill suburb never causes a cancellation.
Will my teen be taught by Aaron?
Aaron teaches a small group of students himself. When your teen is better matched with a specialist in their subject, Aaron pairs them with one of his handpicked tutors, trained in exactly the same method. Either way, Aaron speaks to you first, reviews the plan and stays across your teen's progress all year.
Which Wellington schools do your students come from?
Students come from schools including Wellington College, Wellington Girls' College, Onslow College, Rongotai College, Tawa College and Scots College. All of them sit the same national NZQA assessments.
Is online tutoring as good as an in person tutor in Wellington?
In practice it works better. Nobody loses an hour to the car, the lesson holds through winter and exam leave, and everything written during the hour is saved and sent through. Most importantly, you are choosing a tutor on their record rather than on how far away they live.
What does NCEA tutoring cost in Wellington?
The same as anywhere else in New Zealand, including Wellington, because there is no travel to price in. One hour is $90. Two hours a week works out at $160, or $80 an hour. A block of twelve is $960. The weekly workbook is included either way.
Which subjects and levels do you cover?
Year 10 through to NCEA Level 3. That covers the numeracy co-requisite, Level 1 and 2 Mathematics and Statistics, Level 3 Calculus and Statistics, plus Science, Physics and Chemistry.
How do we get started?
Two ways for Wellington families. Fill in the short form on the contact page, or text Aaron directly. All he needs to start is the year level and the subject.
