No grade ever says algebra
Algebra sits inside the Level 1 maths standards rather than having its own. A student can lose marks to algebra all year and never see the word on a report.

Online NCEA Level 1 Algebra Tutoring · Year 11 · New Zealand Wide
Aaron, founder of Ace NCEA, is your NCEA Level 1 algebra tutor, teaching one on one online, anywhere in New Zealand. Algebra is the part of Year 11 maths that decides how the next two years go.
What goes wrong
Algebra is not a standard on its own, which is exactly why it slips through.
Algebra sits inside the Level 1 maths standards rather than having its own. A student can lose marks to algebra all year and never see the word on a report.
Level 1 assumes negatives, fractions, indices and expanding are automatic. Where they are not, every question takes longer and time runs out in the exam.
Level 2 algebra is one of the biggest November papers and it assumes Level 1 is solid. Arriving in Year 12 with shaky algebra makes the whole year harder.
The method
Algebra is rebuilt in a deliberate order, because each step genuinely depends on the one before it.
Aaron looks at your teen's first internals and any Year 10 work before lesson one. Level 1 problems almost always start earlier than Year 11, and naming exactly where is most of the fix.
Year 11 is the first year anything counts, so confidence matters as much as content. We stay on a topic until your teen can explain it back without notes.
Most Year 11 students have never seen the difference between an Achieved answer and a Merit one written side by side. Aaron shows them, using their own work.
Internals run all year. Aaron plans around your teen's assessment calendar so credits land steadily instead of everything resting on the exams.
Who teaches your teen
Aaron finished NCEA with more than 310 Excellence credits and was Dux and Head Boy in the same year. He teaches a small group of students himself and matches everyone else with a specialist tutor he has handpicked and trained in his method. He speaks to every family and reviews every plan, so your teen gets the same standard whoever teaches them.

This is the pattern we see most often. Two students are on the same grade in March, and only one of them gets weekly support.
What we cover
Algebra is assessed inside the Level 1 maths standards. Here is where it shows up and what it has to support.
At Level 1 the externals are the papers your teen sits in the national exams at the end of Year 11. NZQA marks them, not the school, and the results come back in January.
Internals are assessed during the year through investigations, reports and in-class tasks. Teachers mark them and NZQA moderates a sample. Credits bank as your teen goes, so Term 1 already counts.
Negatives, fractions, indices, expanding, factorising and solving. If any of these are slow, Level 1 becomes a time problem rather than a knowledge problem.
Algebra appears inside the mathematical methods work done at school and in the reasoning paper sat in the November exams.
Level 2 algebra is a major November paper and the usual entry requirement for Level 3 Calculus. Getting Level 1 algebra fluent is what keeps that door open.
The pathway
Here is every standard your teen is assessed on, and which parts NZQA marks in November rather than the school during the year.
Sat online and graded Achieved or Not Achieved. Without it NCEA is not awarded at any level, however many subject credits your teen has. Most students first sit it in Year 10, it can be sat again in Year 11, 12 or 13, and it only has to be passed once. Numeracy CAA tutoring ›
The Level 1 maths subject. This is the year to build the fluency that Levels 2 and 3 both assume, especially in algebra.
The fork in the road. How your teen goes in algebra and calculus here decides whether Level 3 Calculus is realistic next year.
How it works
Every student follows the same four steps, so you always know what is happening and why.
Tell Aaron about your teen. In twenty minutes he will find where the marks are being lost and explain what it will take to fix it.
Aaron teaches a small group of students himself and matches everyone else with a specialist tutor he has chosen for their subject.
After the first lesson you get a written plan showing every gap, how it will be fixed and in what order. Aaron reviews every plan.
Your teen gets a workbook for each week, and you get a short written update on how they are going.
From parents
“Our son was scraping Achieved in Year 12 Physics and had convinced himself he just was not a science person. Aaron worked out in the first couple of sessions that the real problem was algebra from Year 10, went back and fixed that, and suddenly the physics started making sense. He finished the year with Merit in both externals and actually enjoys the subject now. The weekly update was a lovely touch, because for the first time we knew how he was going without having to drag it out of him.”
“I was really struggling with differentiation and my teacher's explanations just were not clicking. Aaron explains things in a way that actually makes sense, and he never made me feel dumb for asking the same thing twice. I went from Not Achieved in my first internal to Excellence in the exam. Honestly the best decision I made this year.”
“Our daughter used to go quiet whenever maths came up. After a term she was putting her hand up in class and asking for harder questions. Her confidence has completely turned around, and the grades came with it.”
“Aaron matched our son with one of his chemistry specialists after a disappointing mid year report. The lessons are structured, there is a workbook every week, and everything is marked the way NZQA marks it, so he finally knew what an Excellence answer looks like. He finished with Excellence in two of his three externals, which we did not think was possible back in March.”
“Patient, reliable and great with teenagers. Our son actually looks forward to his sessions, which says it all. Highly recommend.”
